Legislative Preview 2019

Speaking from 15 years being a WDEA, AEA and NEA member I know that I am not fully knowledgeable to all the terms the Arizona state legislature.  I must admit my general understandings falls back to my Arizona history requirements when I first started teaching. The illustrious, Stephanie Parra down at AEA conducted a ZOOM meeting recently that lays out the nuts and bolts of what the current legislature looks like.  Stephanie reviews the names of the republicans and democrats now in the current Senate and House.  Remember, the House now holds the smallest Republican majority since 1988.  Parra reviews the helpful breakdown of Bills, Rederendums and Citizen Initiatives.  Our AEA lobbyist notes specific Senate (SB) and House bills (HB) that are threatening the #RedforEd movement.  For those you who were down there in April with 75,000 of your public education supporting friends the fight for public education funding continues.  You don't have to be dow...

Fun at the Fiesta Bowl Parade

Happy New Year 2019 from the members of your WDEA Executive Board! Our esteemed WDEA President Heather LaBelle and hardworking WDEA Secretary Lisa Love were pulling their own weight at the 48th annual Fiesta Bowl Parade.  Their hands held tight to the rope of the Arizona Education Association balloon float that joined dozens of displays in the streets of downtown Phoenix on Saturday, December 29th.   In addition to the thousands of spectators, LaBelle and Love were joined by additional AEA members (pictured left: Lisa, Heather, Sydney, Kyle and Roseanne) who bundled up for the cold winter temperatures to show their support for the AEA and the #RedforEd movement that made national news at the end of last school year 2018. Keeping #RedforEd in the public eye and reminding all of the parade viewers that public educators are strong and will continue to ask legislators and the community to make the BEST decisions based on the needs of our students and staff.  If you...
