WESD SCHOOL BOARD VOTES FOR PLAN 3-2

On July 9, the WESD school board voted 3-2 to accept the district's plan for a virtual reopening on August 10 with an option of either virtual or in person classes beginning on August 17.   The two nay votes; against the district plan as is were School Board Members: Nikkie Whaley and Larry Herrera.  The School Board Members that voted to pass the plan were Tee Lambert, Bill Adams and Aarron Jahneke.  Nikkie Whaley made a proposed motion for the district to go online until Labor Day which did not receive a seconded needed to move on to a board member vote.  This was very disappointing!

The board meeting went well into the late night ending around midnight with the approval of the plan.  There were close to 400 questions that were asked from teachers, parents, and community members.  At one point there were over 600 people watching the live feed of the meeting.  WESD Task Force committees will be following up with the questions that were asked during the minutes of the meeting.  They took previously emailed questions, as well as, live questions.

Currently, with this board approval of the current plan, teachers will be attending pre week on campus practicing social distancing and mask wearing.  Students will be starting online virtually on August 10.  Schools will conduct classes online until the end of the executive order on August 17.  From this point parents (who have previously chosen to send their kids in-person or virtual learning) will send the in-person students to school while virtual learning will continue to be online per the parent request.  All classes will be taught by WESD teachers.

WDEA has since posted a WESD staff survey to members and non members to complete to get a temperature check on how people are feeling with the board approval vote.  This survey was similar to the previous survey that was sent out earlier this summer.  Currently, we have a response of over several hundred of WESD employees in the matter of a couple hours.  The survey will be open until July 14.  Members please check your personal emails for this survey and or check your work or personal emails if a non member.

***UPDATE:  WESD has changed the virtual learning for the next 30 calendar days (through Labor Day) as of 5:45pm August 10***
